The study, which was commissioned by brewers Greene King, found that some of the most cheesiest chat-up lines do still work when it comes to pulling a partner.
So much so, that 42% of respondents admitted that they still like the cheesiness about the whole thing. What is probably more interesting though, is that 31% said that chat-up lines have worked on them in the past.
The most popular ice-breaker was said to be 'Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?', with 'Hello gorgeous' and 'Can I buy you a drink?' also featuring on the list.
However, for the line to work, 58% said they needed to be tried in person, rather than online, as 56% said they didn't work as well via a text or online platform.
Elsewhere on the 'Top 10' list, the catchphrase made famous by Friends' character Joey Tribbiani – 'How You Doin?' - came in at sixth place, while 'Do you come here often?' was another offering. A social network-inspired line 'What's app?' also was mentioned.
Other popular light-hearted, but equally desperate, chat-up attempts included: 'Do you know how much a polar bear weighs? Me neither, but it broke the ice', and 'Do you have any raisins that I could have? How about a date instead?'.
When it comes to deciding which line to use, men prefer to keep it simple, with 'Hello gorgeous', while women said they preferred 'Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?'
Mark Blythman, of Greene King, said: "it is hard for many people to make that first approach, so a chat-up line can really break the ice.
"The atmosphere in a friendly pub lends itself perfectly to meeting new people.
"Why not have a go at rolling out a well-loved chat-up line down your local and see if something blossoms?"
