Ann Duffy, 50, of Plymouth, was also issued with an indefinite restraining order against her brother's wife. She had previously admitted harassment without violence.
According to reports, Magistrate Graham Price described Ms Duffy's actions as "totally unacceptable".
In November last year, Ms Duffy called Plymouth Register Office pretending to her now sister-in-law Sandra. The call, which told the venue to cancel the ceremony, was made on the 5th November – 20 days before the couple were due to marry. Following that call, Duffy then contacted her brother and the details of their conversation were shared in court.
Her brother David said he was told by his sibling: "You had better put this on speakerphone.
"I have saved you from a divorce. I have cancelled your wedding. Would you like me to send you the confirmation email?"
The couple contacted police as well as the registry office, where they explained what had happened and were able to re-book their original ceremony.
In court, prosecutor Will Rose said: "It is like a lift from an EastEnders' plot line, but it was the sad reality that confronted the complainants in this case."
He added that it was "a cruel and vindictive act which left the couple distressed and distraught".
Miss Rebecca Wood, mitigating, stated: "She does not like her sister-in-law and there are ongoing issues between them.
"It is not an excuse. She intended to cause inconvenience and upset."
It is understood Duffy admitted in a police interview that her relationship with her sister-in-law was strained over an issue regarding who was looking after Duffy's mother. The accused felt that the other woman was taking her mother away and as such, she believed she needed to protect her brother from a marriage to someone she did not like. However, Duffy also said that she only wanted to cause Sandra distress, and not her brother.
