The couple have been together for 28 years and married for 23 of those years. They have one son, 23-year-old Beau, together.
According to TMZ, a source claims the couple have been living apart for the last four months. They also quote the singer's estranged partner as saying: "This has been looming for some time. I am truly heartbroken that our marriage is ending."
News of the couple's separation comes after 63-year-old Cassidy was arrested in Southern California last month on suspicion of drink driving.
The star, who appeared in the hit television show 'The Partridge Family' in the 70s, is reported to have been in rehab.
Elsewhere, E! News claimed that David released a statement saying: "It is very sad that Sue chose to take this approach. I have tried to resolve this amicably outside of the public eye.
"I have reached out to her with no response over the last three months. It's a sad day for me and for our son Beau."
