Others admitted to replying with a not-so-genuine outpouring of love because "it seemed like the right thing to say". Some 15% said they had uttered the words when they hadn't really meant it because they were in the throes of passion. Elsewhere, some claimed they had said 'I love you' by accident, while others wanted to please their family or friends.
Interestingly, women are more likely to say 'I love you' without meaning it, while men tend to be the ones who say those three little words first. It isn't necessarily always a good thing, however, because almost half of those whose partners had said 'I love you' for the first time, said they hadn't said it back.
Women (59%) were more likely to not say it back, compared to men (41%), and this is said to be because they were not in love with their partner. 74% of women and 62% of men cited this reason.
When it comes to uttering those important words, 59% confessed they had told their other half they loved them within a month of dating; while a bold 3% said it on the very first date.
Once a relationship is more stable, couples were found to be much more comfortable declaring their love, with 36% saying it once a day, with 14% saying it a number of times a week. Yet, around half of participants said that people who often say 'I love you' are not expressing genuine feelings by saying it.
A spokesperson for Lovehoney said: "These new findings show that men are more comfortable taking the lead when it comes to saying 'I love you.'
"But men are much more careful and are less prepared to say it when it is not felt."
