One in five women are left disappointed at how their other half has proposed to them, according to a new survey.
The research, which was carried out by Vashi.com, found that 21% of engaged, married or divorced women were left disappointed by their marriage proposal, but they didn't say anything to their partner at the time. Looking back however, they wished they had tackled the subject. Of those left disappointed, 13% said they wanted to cry because the proposal had not lived up to their expectations.
The reasons why women are left so disappointed were because the engagement ring was too small, or there was no ring at all; the man had not got down on one knee to propose, nor had he asked the parents' permission for their daughter's hand in marriage. Failing to organise a "special" proposal was also included in the list.
For some couples, the proposal was such a let down that they argued afterwards, while other disappointed brides-to-be turned to their friends for comfort.
Elsewhere, when it comes to actually purchasing an engagement ring, 45% of women said they would consider chipping in towards the cost, while 7% said they had contributed.
More than a third (38%) said an engagement ring was important because it is a symbol of how much their partner loves them; but 12% said they would change the style of their engagement ring, while 24% said they didn't like any of their friends' engagement rings. Interestingly, for 7% of women, they admitted that they did like their friends' engagement rings – but would never tell them so – while others ensure their ring is "bigger and better" than their friends.
A spokesperson from Vashi.com is quoted as saying: "It has been very insightful to learn that so many females would make a financial contribution to their engagement ring, further proving just how important the ring of their dreams really is."
