According to the New York Post, Gere and Carey Lowell are said to have ended their marriage after growing apart.
A source close to the couple is quoted as saying: "They've been spending time apart for quite some time."
The actor, 64, and his 52-year-old wife, have not been pictured together in public since January.
One of the major factors behind the couple's split is understood to be the differing lifestyles of the two actors.
Gere is said to prefer a quiet and peaceful life at home, while Lowell is said be more outgoing and likes "socialising with other bigwigs".
Another source claimed: "They have a place in Bedford (New York), and he likes it because it's quiet and he likes the solitude. She likes being in North Haven in the limelight. They live next door to Jimmy Buffett and his family, and they're good friends."
The couple have been married since 2002 and have a son, Homer, together.
Lowell also has a 23-year-old daughter, Hannah Dunne, from her marriage to second husband Griffin Dunne. Her first spouse was fashion photographer John Stember.
Gere was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford. They married in 1995 and separated in 1995.
