Two Jailed In Sham Marriage Plot

Two men have been jailed for 12 months each after conspiring to arrange a sham marriage.

According to the Shropshire Star, the men from Cameroon - Asaba Fualefac, 23, and Carl Cheo, 34 - were arrested by officers from the Home Office's Criminal and Financial Investigations team on March 19 at Birmingham New Street Station.

The two men were preparing to board a train to Shrewsbury for the wedding.

It is understood Fualefac, who was in the UK on a student visa, had hoped that his marriage to Nokuthaba Sibanda, a British woman, would allow him to gain long-term residency and the right to work and claim benefits.

Suspicions were raised when Ms Sibanda, having already taken a £1,000 advance payment from Cheo, decided not to go through with the plan and contacted Shrewsbury Register Office on March 18 to inform them that the wedding scheduled for the following day was a sham.

When both men were arrested, they were in possession of a wedding rings and a crib sheet about the ceremony.

On Monday, the pair were sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court after admitting to charges of conspiracy to facilitate a breach of the UK's immigration rules at an earlier hearing.

Sibanda, 20, was also given a 12-month conditional discharge at an earlier hearing having admitted a charge of fraud by false representation.
