Following speculation earlier this week that the couple were going through a troubled patch, representatives for both have now confirmed that they have called off their wedding.
A reason for the break-up was not given, but it has been reported that Cyrus's controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance last month was the final straw for the 23-year-old actor.
Cyrus, 20, caused outrage last month following a provocative performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Awards. It was just the latest situation where the former Disney Channel star has tried to shed her teen idol image.
Last weekend, Cyrus stopped following her fiancé on Twitter, prompting sources to claim the pair had split.
The couple were together for four years. They first met on the set of the film The Last Song in 2009 and started dating shortly after. In June last year, they announced their engagement.
