According to the study, conducted by Cupid.com, 22% of respondents thought that between the age of 26 and 29 was the ideal age to tie the knot.
The results also revealed that this age range is thought to be the best time for a couple to start a family as well.
Among the reasons for the delay in couples getting married and starting families include having more life experience, being more self-aware and having time to save money.
Of those who took part in the poll, 62% of couples admitted they would not contemplate opening a joint bank account until they had secured all of the things above.
Elsewhere, 43% of men were found to say 'I Love You', as soon as they feel the emotion, compared to just 28% of women, and while 21% of men are happy to talk about ex-partners, 26% of women would never discuss the topic. When it comes to family, 5% felt that meeting the parents is something that should be done a few months after a couple starts dating, while a third of men claimed they are happy to meet their partner's parents straightaway. Both sexes were in agreement, however, that the man should be older when looking for a new partner, with 32% saying five years and more is about the right amount for an age difference.
