The 66-year-old made the comments to host Dermot O'Leary at an event to celebrate the musician's BRITs Icon Award.
The singer and his long-term partner, David Furnish, have two sons – Zachary, 3, and Elijah, six months – both born from the same surrogate mother.
When asked about family, John said: "It was the best decision we ever did.
"I wish we had done it 20 years earlier because I am no spring chicken. I understand people criticising for us having children at a late age but to hell with it. We can give these children so much love."
Speaking at the London Palladium audience during a question and answer session, he also admitted the couple aren't worried about looking after their children, and they don't get angry if the infants misbehave.
"I don't really tell them off," he admitted. "If they are being naughty they are being naughty. They are just kids. We just say, 'Calm down, calm down'. Everything I thought would be annoying about being a father I find enchanting."
Elton John and David Furnish started a relationship in 1993. In December 2005, the day the Civil Partnership Act came into force, the couple were among one of the first couples in the UK to form a civil partnership at the Windsor Guildhall.
