The 2003 romantic comedy, which starred Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Keira Knightley, beat other famous rom-coms, such as Notting Hill, to claim top spot.
In contrast, The Exorcist has been named as the worst choice of movie for a first date, with the emotional Schindler's List coming in second.
The study, carried out by TalkTalk to celebrate the first airing of its new Date Night TV, revealed other films to make the top ten best list were Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones Diary and Titanic, while the films making the 'no-no' list for a first date include The Terminator, Die Hard and Spice World.
Of those polled, around one in 10 said a poor choice of film would be a reason to avoid meeting up for a second date. A further third admitted to having their first kiss with a new partner in front of a TV date night, while one in six people also admitted to feeling awkward and embarrassed if their partner suggests television with lots of sex scenes or steamy romance.
Elsewhere, the survey revealed women wait until the fifth date before suggesting a night in front of the television, while men are more bold and offer it as a third date.
TalkTalk's Commercial Director Tristia Harrison said: ''With couples enjoying their first date night in front of the TV just a couple of weeks into their relationship, our research shows just how important it is to pick the right film for a romantic evening.''
