Police Hold Wedding For Sniffer Dogs

Police officers in Sri Lanka have come under criticism after they held a wedding ceremony – for 18 sniffer dogs.

According to the BBC, the officers said it was a humorous way to promote the domestic breeding of sniffer dogs.

The 'grooms' wore red ties while the 'brides' wore mittens, shawls and hats for the ceremony. They were then placed on a platform which was decorated with white cloth and flowers.

In a statement, however, the police have since apologised for their actions.

The apology follows a statement by Culture Minister TB Ekanayake who said the officers involved had "contemptibly devalued" and offended traditional weddings in the Buddhist country.

Speaking to reporters he said: "This is not acceptable according to our cultural norms.

"We are people who really value out traditional weddings - which are only done at auspicious times alongside the chanting of stanzas and [other] poruwa rituals.

"The police have demeaned all this by conducting this in the Kandy - the city of the [famous Buddhist) Temple of [the] Tooth. I totally condemn this."

Mr Ekanayake added that he had written to the Inspector General of the police force asking for an inquiry to be carried out.

In response to criticism, police said the area where the 'wedding' was held was staged and had nothing to do with the religion, adding that the platform for the ceremony was used to the animals could be photographed better.

In a statement, they said: "This did not in anyway resemble a poruwa and was simply placed there for the photo opportunity."

According to reports, the ceremonies were witnessed by a number of vets, medical doctors, police officers and members of the public in the town of Kandy. It was signed off by an official. It is thought up to 1,000 guests attended the ceremony. Afterwards, the 'couples' were driven off by police van to the hill resort of Nuwara Eliya for their 'honeymoon'.
